To start the All Star Game for the National League, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny chose to give the ball to his own ace, Adam Wainwright. You could say it wasn’t a complete snub of LA’s Clayton Kershaw since Wainwright has been dominant in his own right this season.
Even so, the Dodgers southpaw just had a run of 41 straight scoreless innings snapped and has been the best pitcher in the league since returning from his early season back inflammation. On Sunday, the two-time Cy Young award winner has an opportunity to deliver some payback, while Matheny’s club has the unenviable task of trying to best the hot-handed Kershaw. More importantly for Kershaw and the Dodgers, they need to salvage the third game after losing the first two.
While no one would be shocked if Kershaw came out and tossed a no-hitter – he’s been that good lately – he hasn’t had much recent success at Busch Stadium. Most notably, he was hit hard in two losses in St. Louis during the 2013 National League Championship Series. Overall though, he’s lost four straight decisions in St. Louis. Despite the mini-curse in Busch Stadium, the LA lefty is currently on a run of seven straight starts of allowing 1 or fewer runs, so something has to give in the Gateway City this evening.
Will it be more scuffling in St. Louis, or will current trends hold sway? Will Clayton Kershaw have his best stuff tonight?
